A MAN who assaulted another man on a bus and who stole $2000 during an early-morning visit to a brothel while the assault proceedings were before the court was jailed yesterday for three months.

Matthew Jon Sharp, 20, an apprentice electrician, pleaded guilty in Newcastle Local Court to assault causing actual bodily harm and larceny.

Sharp has lodged an appeal against the severity of his sentence.

A police statement before the court said Sharp, of Campbell Street, Warners Bay, twice punched a man in the face on a Newcastle bus about 2.40am on December 30 last year.

About 4am on May 8 this year, Sharp stole about $2000 from an office cash drawer at the Cloud 9 brothel in Union Street, Newcastle West, after a short visit with a brothel employee in an upstairs room.

Sharp's solicitor, Mansell Laidler, said his client was a courteous, sensible person in every other facet of his life but had a problem with alcohol.
