DRIVERS in the 2008 Variety Bash for cash are going the extra distance to raise money for children with special needs.

Before setting off from Speers Point Park yesterday, Variety gave a Sunshine Coach to Kotara Special School.

Bash media co-ordinator Tony Tamplin said drivers hoped to raise more than the $300,000 brought in last year. The money will be distributed to children with special needs in the Hunter.

The 150 Bashers will drive on mainly dirt roads in the week-long tour with overnight pit stops in Taree, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Glen Innes and Tamworth, before arriving in Cessnock on Saturday.

Forty of the 50 Bash cars predate 1970 and are owned by Variety members.

"Some of the old cars get into sticky situations on the dirt roads and it can get a bit sloppy going through the creek crossings," Mr Tamplin said.

Ten cars provide back-up and some have mobile workshops "to get any cars that are in trouble, out of trouble", he said.

The drivers will visit several hospitals along the way and hand over 17 infant resuscitation dolls for CPR training.
