YESTERDAY'S interest rate rise could spell good news for many independent retirees, especially those who hold the majority of their investments in cash accounts.

Windella retiree Richard Sargent, 65, said he sold an investment property last year to take advantage of superannuation changes.

He said he invested the proceeds on the sharemarket, in cash accounts and other facilities, and expected the rate rise to have a positive effect.

However, Mr Sargent said he believed the gain from the interest rate rise could be shortlived.
